1.Teaching Objectives

This program provides comprehensive education and training of shipping business, which enables students acquire an in-depth understanding of international transport theory and practice as well. Our students are deliberately exposed to principles in liner shipping management, ship chartering, international trade, transport laws and regulations, maritime governance and other critical areas of the shipping industry. Supplemented by the interaction between theoretical learning and industry practice, graduates are equipped with skills in problem solving and innovation, leading to their successful careers in shipping companies and maritime organizations. Therefore, high level expertise can be achieved by fostering both comprehensive academic and practical skills. While a global perspective is embedded in the initial design of the program, it also put emphasis on serving China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which enable our students to access and seize the opportunities of the time.

 

2.Main Courses & Learning Outcomes

This program offers four categories of main courses in cultivating the candidates’ abilities from the following aspects:

l  Through the study of basic theories such as Principle of Management, Shipping Economics, Literature Review of Transport Management, etc., students can master research methods and the ability of logical thinking.

l  Core professional courses such as International Shipping Management, Liner Shipping Practice, Chartering Practice, Strategic Management in Shipping Industry, etc., illustrate the operation mechanism and practical process of international shipping, which is the fundamental premise for management and senior administrative careers in the shipping industry.

l  The expansion of professional courses such as shipping marketing and supply chain management, enable students to comprehend the development trend of the international shipping market and cultivate their decision-making ability from the perspective of supply chain.

l  Legal courses such as maritime policies and regulations, contract law, maritime law, marine insurance law, etc., impart students business legal knowledge, so as to enhance their skills for business negotiation and the ability to handle legal issues in the shipping practice.

What’s more, supporting internship programs are available for students in strengthening their practical skills throughout the four years studies, including shipping company internship program.


3.Career Outcomes

The close relationship between our department and the industry expands the employment scope of our graduates to the shipping industry, including freight forwarding, shipping brokerage to shipping management, ship chartering business, and even shipping finance and some NGOs in the industry, etc.

Internationalization is always our main concern. Thanks to China’s BRI, recent years we have witnessed the surge of the trade and transport along the Belt and Road. This program prepares students for their careers in private and public sectors of the BRI countries.
